Türkiye Launches First National Car Brand Togg with $50K Price Tag

  • 16 March 2023

Türkiye has announced the price tag for its first domestically made car brand, the Togg T10X, with pre-orders starting on Thursday. The C-segment SUV will be sold for a price range of TL 953,000 ($50,230) to TL 1.22 million. The fully electric T10X will initially be sold with one engine and two battery options, with deliveries starting in late October 2023. The vehicle is being manufactured by the Automobile Initiative Group of Türkiye (Togg), a consortium of five Turkish companies, in cooperation with the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye. The Togg T10X will have a range of 314 or 523 kilometers (195 and 325 miles), depending on the battery size.

Togg aims to produce up to 20,000 cars this year, and another four models, a sedan, C-hatchback, B-SUV, and B-MPV, by 2030. The current production capacity is around 100,000 vehicles per year, expected to reach 175,000 once Togg's factory reaches full capacity. The brand aims to produce 1 million vehicles across the five segments by 2030.

EV sales in Türkiye jumped 172% year-over-year in 2022 to 7,300 units, but their share remained under 1% within the total vehicle market, which stood at around 783,000 units last year. The proportion of EVs within the total car fleet consisting of 14.3 million units remains very low at one per thousand despite rapid growth.

The Togg project is being seen as a boost to the national car industry, and the Turkish government recently announced an additional 40% customs duty on electric vehicles made in China. This came just days after Chinese EV giant BYD Co. signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkish distributor ALJ Türkiye to enter the Turkish market with its passenger and light commercial vehicles.
