Istanbul Airport Becomes Europe's Busiest Airport in 2022: EUROCONTROL Report

  • 16 March 2023

Istanbul Airport has been named the busiest airport in Europe for the year 2022, according to research recently issued by the European Air Navigation Safety Organization (EUROCONTROL). Istanbul Airport was the only airport in Europe to surpass pre-pandemic flight numbers, accommodating an average of 1156 aircraft daily, according to the research.

The thorough assessment, which was compared to the year 2019, represents an important turning point for Istanbul Airport. Following closely behind are the airports in Amsterdam (1140 flights daily on average), Paris (1122 flights), Frankfurt (1048 flights), and London (1042 flights).

The goal of Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA), which was founded in October 2013, was to construct and run the airport for 25 years. The airport complex was intended to be built in four phases and is located 35 kilometers from the city center. Three runways and a terminal building with a 90 million passenger capacity were put into operation as part of the first phase.

After all, stages are finished, Istanbul Airport will be able to provide flights to more than 300 locations, with a capacity of 200 million passengers per year. This achievement enhances Istanbul's standing as a significant global center linking Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The study serves as evidence of the hard efforts made by the Turkish government, airport management, and workers to elevate Istanbul Airport to the status of a leading European aviation hub. Together with helping the Turkish economy, Istanbul Airport's performance has improved Turkey's standing internationally.
